Pietermaai, Curaçao

Willemstad's restored quarter — small kitchens, music after dark, the city at its most personal.

About Pietermaai

A sense of place.

Pietermaai is a few streets and a long memory. A decade ago much of it was crumbling; today it is the part of Willemstad that locals are quietly proud of — pastel townhouses turned into nine-room hotels, a wine bar in what used to be a chapel, a jazz club where the owner still pours the drinks.

The district is small enough to walk in an evening and dense enough that you won't want to leave. Dinners run late. Streets reopen as terraces. The Caribbean shows up here as music more than beach.
